Discover the Sea of Galilee

Thanks to a combination of historical sites, religious significance, and beautiful vistas, the Sea of Galilee in Israel – also known as 'Lake Kinneret' and 'Lake Tiberias' – is one of the region’s finest tourist attractions.

The history of the Kinneret

While it may be called a sea, the Sea of Galilee is actually a lake. In fact, at 212 meters below sea level it’s considered the lowest fresh water lake on the planet. For centuries the lake has been vitally important to the region, providing a source of food and water for inhabitants. The lake is regarded as holy by Christians thanks to its role in the Bible. It was here the Jesus was said to have walked on water and preached sermons to his disciples. As such, the region has become something of a pilgrimage favorite, so much so that today an extensive trail has been created connecting the various religiously significant locations.

Visiting the sea & its surrounding area

The town of Tiberias serves as an unofficial capital to the Sea of Galilee in Israel, with most tourists choosing to stay here, or at least begin their trip here. Here you’ll find hotels, restaurants, beaches, watersports, and a ferry travelling to various locations around the lake’s shores. Watersports prove particularly popular with both domestic and international tourists, with yachting, waterskiing, swimming, and diving all favored. The waters of the lake see an abundance of fish, which means fishing is also popular.

Visitors looking to exploring the region can visit many of the kibbutz located around the lake, while the likes of Nazareth, Capernaum, and the Golan Heights are all just a short drive away. Looking for something completely different? Take a visit to the alligator farm in Hammat Gader.

Getting to The Sea of Galilee

Located in Northeast Israel, the Sea of Galileeis connected to Haifa, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv by major roads, making it easy to drive there. Drivers are recommended to follow signs for Tiberias and explore the sea from there.

Where to eat

If you’re in Tiberias, you’ll find plenty of restaurants. Specialist grill and fish restaurants prove popular, although you’ll find a little bit of everything in these parts. Elsewhere around the lake - especially on its eastern side - you’ll find a smaller selection of restaurants and eateries, particularly at resorts and close to tourist attractions.

When to visit

Thanks to consistently warm temperatures and sunshine, visitors head to the shoreline village Kinneret in Israel and the sea itself all year round. The region is generally busiest during the summer times, with peak times falling between June and September. Visitors arriving in September may witness the Kinneret Crossing, which sees thousands of swimmers cross the lake.
